SNPs, You & Disease

The FDA’s decision to keep Vioxx® and Celebrex® on the market was applauded by many who are dependent on these drugs. For patients with fibromyalgia, arthritis and other inflammatory diseases, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are lifesavers—but at what cost?

There is no question they provide much-needed relief from the agony of living with chronic pain, but the relief lasts only until it’s time for the next pill. Long-term use can alleviate pain, but it can also create plenty of collateral damage in the body.

CASE STUDY—NSAIDs’ TOXICITY

Dr. Alberto Peña of Sanoviv Medical Institute, an integrative medicine hospital just south of San Diego, says he has seen plenty of evidence of NSAIDs’ toxicity.

Earlier this year, doctors at Sanoviv were concerned about high levels of proteins in the urine of a fibromyalgia patient, a clear indication of kidney trouble. Although many of my family members had been to this remarkable place, it was my first experience. DO YOU NEED TO DETOX?

Modern life exposes all of us to everything from air pollution to pesticide residue on our food. I find that this small step has actually increased my enjoyment of food, though I'm eating less. The more you chew, the less you have to detox later. Unchewed and undigested food is a big contributor to toxic waste and gas in the intestines.

One of my favorite at-home detox regimens is USANA’s 5-Day High Fiber Cleanse, which is very easy and very helpful. Doing the Cleanse is so effective that most people are thrilled with the renewed vitality they feel. Many also report clearer skin and eyes as well as moderate weight loss.

What Is Multiple Sclerosis?

According to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, MS is thought to be an autoimmune disease that affects the central nervous system (CNS). An autoimmune disease is one in which the human immune system begins to dysfunction and actually receives signals to begin attacking and breaking down various systems within the body.

In MS, the immune system begins to attack the brain, spinal cord, and the optic nerves. Surrounding and protecting the nerve fibers of the CNS is a fatty tissue called myelin, a substance rich in protein and lipids fatty substances that forms layers around the nerve fibers and acts as insulation, much like a rubber chord insulates electrical wiring. This insulation helps nerve fibers conduct electrical impulses.

In MS, myelin is lost in multiple areas, leaving scar tissue called sclerosis. These damaged areas are also known as plaques or lesions. Sometimes the nerve fiber itself is damaged or broken.
Myelin not only protects nerve fibers, but makes their job possible. When myelin or the nerve fiber is destroyed or damaged, the ability of the nerves to conduct electrical impulses to and from the brain is disrupted, and this produces the various symptoms of MS.

Who Is Dr. Myron Wentz and Why Did He Create Sanoviv?

In his quest to improve the health of as many people as possible, Dr. Myron Wentz realized that he needed to continue advancing the field of nutrition and to accelerate the world's understanding and acceptance of the importance of nutrition. To this end he created a wellness center for women in Atlanta, Georgia-an experiment in integrative medicine that brings conventional doctors and alternative medical practitioners together into an intelligent, effective continuum of care that acknowledges the vital role of good nutrition.

Taking this concept one giant step further, Dr. Wentz created Sanoviv, his crown jewel.
